5 Ways to Keep Your Kidneys Healthy
March is National Kidney Month, and it is far more critical to note than you might expect. According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), every year, over 47,000 Americans die from kidney disease.
There are so many simple ways to take care of our kidneys, and Medical Associates wants to help you do just that. Here are five ways that you can keep your kidneys healthy.
1. Keep Your Blood Pressure Target
Your blood pressure is vital to your kidney function remaining healthy. According to the CDC, you should keep your blood pressure below 140/90 to sustain proper kidney health. If your doctor has prescribed a different blood pressure target, follow the guidelines they have set for you.
2. Lower Salt Intake
Salt intake plays a massive role in the health of your kidneys and your blood pressure. Make sure not to consume beyond the recommended daily salt intake. You can do so by eating foods lower in salts, such as fruit, vegetables, and poultry.
3. Eat Your Fruits and Veggies
Speaking of fruits and vegetables, it is recommended that you should eat more fruits and vegetables to retain healthy kidneys. Take apples, for example. Because apples are rich in pectin, a type of soluble fiber that lowers LDL, they may help reduce cholesterol levels. LDL (low-density lipoprotein) is known as the “bad” cholesterol because it collects in the walls of your blood vessels, raising your chances of health problems like a heart attack or stroke. So, it turns out that “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” is somewhat accurate!
4. Stay Active
Activity is essential for the human body in more ways than just keeping excellent kidney function. It is recommended that we get at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity every day. This activity can be walking, hiking, going to a gym, or working out from home!
5. Stay On Your Medications
This step might seem like a no-brainer, but it serves as a great reminder to continually take medicine as your doctor has prescribed. Keeping a regulated medicine intake schedule will help you stay on track while also keeping you accountable to stay the course.
